Why Training?

HUMAN TRAFFICKING TOUCHES OUR WORK & LIVES

Hidden in plain sight, men, women and children are physically and psychologically compelled into work in factories, agriculture and other industries and into prostitution. Trafficked persons live and work in our communities, producing the goods and services we use every day. They can’t leave because of threats, physical and sexual abuse, imposed debts, fear of law enforcement and immigration consequences, unpaid wages and shame.

27 MILLION ARE ENSLAVED BUT 99% ARE UNIDENTIFIED

""The U.S. Department of State reports that 27 million people are enslaved globally. Yet each year less than 1% is identified. Put another way, more than 99% are still enslaved despite over a decade of formal efforts.

“Social scientists estimate that as many as 27 million men, women and children are trafficking victims at any given time. That means we're bringing to light only a mere fraction of those who are exploited in modern slavery. That number and the millions who remain unidentified, are the numbers that deserve our focus.”

— 2013 Trafficking in Persons Report, U.S. Department of State

PROFESSIONALS UNKNOWINGLY ENCOUNTER HUMAN TRAFFICKING

Corporate Sector. Health. Education. Media. Immigration. Criminal Justice. Labor. Social Services.

Status quo efforts rely primarily on law enforcement to find and prevent trafficking. The gap between the number of people enslaved and identified demonstrates the need to expand beyond law enforcement. Studies show that trafficked persons interact with a range of additional professionals in the health, education, immigration, labor and employment, social services and corporate sectors. These professionals are all in the position to identify or prevent trafficking in the course of their daily work. But they can only take action once they understand exactly what trafficking looks like and how to respond appropriately. Identification leads to freedom and services and prevention reduces the risk of human trafficking.

FILLING THE TRAINING GAP LEADS TO FREEDOM

Trafficked persons rarely self-identify, leaving others to recognize them. Few have been exposed to the techniques and practices that lead to effective identification and prevention. Where training occurs, identification increases. Human trafficking training is in short supply.

Many trafficked persons don’t realize that help may be available. Alone, trapped, and fearful of retribution if they tell anyone, trafficked persons are reluctant to seek help. Identification only occurs when we know the indicators and understand exactly how to take action. And prevention only occurs when we know what policies and practices to implement.

“Anti-trafficking training for government officials and targeted professionals should go beyond awareness raising. Clear guidelines on how to proceed when someone suspects a case of trafficking, including whether and how to approach a possible victim, and what to expect if a case goes forward, greatly improves the effectiveness of victim identification efforts.”

— 2013 Trafficking in Persons Report, U.S. Department of State
